Our History

Founding & Early Days

Headway Chesterfield was founded in 1991 by Ian Stern alongside a dedicated group of volunteers. Throughout the 1990s, the charity developed vital local services, including establishing a Headway House in Brampton to provide dedicated support to brain injury survivors, their carers, and families.

Adapting to Change

Moving into the early 2000s under the leadership of Roger Simpson, the organisation continued to support the local community. However, rising operational costs and funding pressures led to the difficult decision to close the Brampton Headway House in early 2002. Undeterred, the charity pivoted its focus toward direct social outreach, ensuring support remained available where it was needed most.

The Peter Shaw Era: Stability & Growth

In 2003, Peter Shaw became Chairman, initiating a series of key changes that stabilized the charity. Under his leadership, the organization expanded its reach, rebranded to Headway North Derbyshire, and operated as a key branch of Headway UK.

In addition to his committee duties, Peter spent countless hours organizing fundraising events, managing group activities, supporting members, and campaigning with local decision-makers for improved brain injury services. His extraordinary dedication—both locally and nationally—earned him the prestigious Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award in 2015.

For nearly two decades, Peter led the charity with dignity, fairness, and passion, earning the affectionate nickname “Mr Headway” from service users and fellow volunteers alike. He served faithfully until his passing in 2019, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Modernization & A New Chapter

In 2019, Matt Smith was elected Chair to lead the charity into its next chapter. Alongside a strong board of trustees, Matt drove a period of strategic planning and modernization. This momentum culminated in January 2026, when Headway North Derbyshire officially achieved independent charity status, while maintaining its strong affiliation with Headway UK.

Marking a major milestone in its growth, the charity employed its first paid staff member in July 2026. Today, Headway North Derbyshire continues to expand its reach, ensuring that brain injury survivors, carers, and families across the region receive the support they deserve.
